Battleship for the iPhone / iPod touch, what a treat? Well the old plastic toy with little model boats has been upgraded to an electronic version for everyone's favourite music player/phone (iPhone / iPod touch).
Should this battleship be resurrected or left sunk? Well that is the question. Personally I wasn't a fan of the original game so my view maybe a little biased but here goes.
The first thing you notice is there is no ability to choose the location of your ships and they are pre-placed by the game before play begins. I have played a mobile phone version of battleships (avaliable from those nice people at www.coolgorilla.mobi with their Free Mobile Games) before and this feature was available and helped make the game more fun. This was because you could try and make you placement of the ships tactical and crafty making you feel in control against your opponent.
This apart the game begins and you click a square and see if your opponent's ship is behind it. The computer then does the same and you continue till the game is over. What more do you need to know, it plays like the original and is relatively realistic minus the ability to position your ships.
Another missing feature is the ability to play against another person. This could quite easily be done via the net or by passing the iPhone/iPod touch between each other. This feature would really enhance the game and make it a more popular and sociable game.
With these things missing it can't get full marks but has made a good attempt at making an electronic game of a classic childhood toy. Nice work guys, maybe the next version could add the previously mentioned features?
